Improving Your Grant Applications

Westkentcommunities Fundingforall KCC

Fundraising from grant-making bodies:

Improving your applications

With support from Kent County Council, West Kent Communities is running affordable half-day fundraising training courses on behalf of Funding for All and Stronger Kent Communities. Our next courses will be delivered in Dartford, Ashford, Thanet and Tunbridge Wells. It’s easy to book and costs just £10 per course. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis so book early to avoid disappointment.

Who should sign up?

This course is for those volunteering or working in the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) Sector who need to begin or improve their applications to grant-making trusts and/or National Lottery funders.

What will it cover?

The course will cover:

  • What is a grant-making trust?
    (overview of the sector)

  • Why do applications fail?

  • Principles and planning for trust fundraising.

  • How to research grant-making trusts.

  • Getting evidence of need and outcomes.

  • Writing the application.

  • Dos and don'ts of trust fundraising.

Who will run the course?

The course will be run by Kathy Roddy, a qualified and experienced fundraising trainer with more than 20 years in the voluntary sector, first as executive director of a national animal welfare organisation, then, since 2000, as a fundraising trainer and consultant. She is a member of the Institute of Fundraising and holds their Certificate in Fundraising Management. Kathy has recently co-authored an MA module with the University of Kent Centre for Philanthropy on the ‘Art and Science of Fundraising’. Through both training and consultancy, Kathy has helped charities and voluntary groups raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes.

How can I find out about future courses?

We plan to run this course in a further five Kent districts during 2017. We also plan to run three more specialist courses. To get email notifications about future courses, please phone Pauline Smith on 01732 749426 or email your contact details to:

If you are unsure whether your organisation counts, please contact Pauline Smith on 01732 749426.

Training fees are non-refundable. If you can’t attend on the booked date, you are welcome to send someone else who works or volunteers for a VCSE sector organisation operating in at least one of the 12 council districts in Kent (excluding Medway).

All courses are delivered by West Kent on behalf of Funding for All and Stronger Kent Communities

All participants will be asked to complete a pre-course registration form and post-course evaluation form. West Kent, Funding for All and Stronger Kent Communities will use this information to analyse the effectiveness of our courses.
